[SOLVED] Bitcraze_VM_0.5 problems with OSX 10.9, VMware Fusi

Post by CliffH »

Importing Bitcraze_VM_0.5 into Fusion created compliance errors, but it loaded anyway. When I run the VM, I see the Xubuntu logo, then the screen goes black.

Suggestions? Should I try a different player, such as VirtualBox?

Please see my blog entry about this... Steps 6 through 10.

The crux of the matter is that you need reduce the VMWare's hardware version to 7 or lower.

Good luck!! :)

Chad,

Awesome! Your blog post is great. I think you might just be a bit more then a layperson... Your blogs should be in the wiki -- they are all really useful. Like you, I'm doing this in preparation for receiving my first -- the crazyflie 2.0.

Only issue -- boot message is "SW updates are no longer provided for Xubuntu 13.10...upgrade to 14.04.1...

Hmmm... Xubuntu 13 must be at end-of-life for supportability. You can try to update to 14 but... IIRC the virtual disk is actually too small to accommodate the update. It can be expanded but it isn't a straight-forward process. I did this on a copy of the VM a few months back but I didn't capture all the steps (just took a few screen shots). It involved more than simply expanding the VMWare disk. You have to use gparted on the Linux side to move partitions around before you can resize the main one. That's the sticky stuff. Like I said, it wasn't straight forward. If I get time, I'll see if I can post a walkthrough about it. I mostly use a Raspberry Pi for ground control these days and when I want the UI, I just run the python client directly on my MacBook — so I haven't run the VM in a while. I still need to post a bit on running the client on your Mac.

Bitcraze is actually tracking the volume size issue in their GitHub repo for the VM so maybe we'll see a fix in the coming rev for CF2.0...

FWIW, Ubuntu 13.10 (which the Bitcraze VM is based on) met end-of-life on July 17, 2014. That's why you can't get updates anymore.

I finally got around to posting my walkthrough on resizing the main drive so, if you want a tutorial, it's available here.

You are doing some great tutorials chad!
We know the VM 0.5 is a bit outdated and a new updated one will be released with the CF2. Or at least short after, the workload now is a bit insane...

Thanks for saying so!!

I can imagine the workload needed for the CF2.0 product launch. The current VM is fine and I'd rather have a CF 2.0 than a new VM so it can wait!

I am using Windows 7 x64. When I run the VMware (VMware v8.0 and VMware v10), I see the Xubuntu logo, then the screen goes black. My CPU does not support the hardware virtualization.
I've download and installed last version Xubuntu and had no problems.
Why can not I run this bitcraze image ?
