how do i develop programs on ubuntu with out using vm

I have the bitcraze VM on my pc runing windows 8.1 but it is slow and has some problems. I want to know if I put ubuntu on a laptop (no VM) how do I get all the software and project files on it? i want a clean boot pc with ubuntu to run the all same development software that is on the VM.
